Catalyst 8.11 WHQL: Radeon display driver reviewed

Author: Marc Sauter (Nov 20, 2008) - With a little delay we deliver a brief review of the latest WHQL Catalyst driver. Our benchmark results reveal if the 8.11 increases the performance of the AMD graphics cards.

Catalyst 8.11 - Introduction
The driver is available for Windows XP and Windows Vista (32 Bit as well as 64 Bit) and can be downloaded at game.amd.com. We also offer a local download for registered users.

Catalyst 8.11 - Changes
The Catalyst 8.11 WHQL delivers several new features: CrossfireX users can now see in games, if the multi GPU technology is really running - the cumbersomely verification via benchmarks can theoretically be cut. Furthermore Hydra Vision is now available on windows XP, too.

Bug or feature? On several test systems we weren't able to overclock the Radeon cards we used. The clock speeds could only be changed in the Catalyst Control Center while tools like Rivatuner didn't work. For all changes see the Release Notes.

Test system:
• Intel X48
• Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.6 GHz (400x9)
• AMD Radeon HD 4870 (750/1,800 MHz; 512 MiByte)
• 2x 2,048 MiByte DDR2-800 (5-5-5-18)
• Windows Vista x64 SP1

Catalyst 8.11 - Performance analysis/Conclusion
At least in the four games and Windows Vista x64 the Catalyst 8.11 WHQL isn't faster than its predecessor. Positive aspects are the Hydra Vision support for Windows XP and the new CrossfireX feature. On the other hand there is the overclocking problem.

Interesting, it appears that cat drivers are weak in vista 64 but appear to do well in 32 bit xp and possibly 32 bit vista. There is a 8.11 hotfix aimed towards the x58, i7 chipset/cpu setup. Some have checked the version and from what they say the version number is older then cat 8.11 itself. Can't say how reliable that information is though.

If you guys are able it would be nice to see some results at 32 bit and/or using x58, i7 setup. Thanks!
