Like most of Valve's games since Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead uses the familiar Source Engine, which has been upgraded with new effects that are usually used in movies. Among those are the not unquestioned graining and a reduced set of colors. How those new features affect the graphics can be seen in our article: Left 4 Dead: Graphics settings compared.

Our benchmark sequence "Final Battle” takes place in the last fight the characters have to survive. Due to masses of zombies the real-time demo mainly stresses the processor. But flames, dynamic shadows and detailed textures are also challenging for the graphics card - especially at high resolutions.

This benchmark is a worst-case scenario. If you have more than 50 fps here, then the rest of the game will run smooth.

The review states: With a Geforce 7 the shooter is almost unplayable.

This isnt exactly true... I have an AMD X2 4800+ / 2GB / Geforce 7800 GTX 512mb / WinXP and im able to run L4D at 1280x800 with all settings on High and 4X FSAA / 2X AF with a decent framerate, It's not silky 60fps smooth all the time but it still runs smoother than Xbox 360's version with these settings and ive been playing it online every night since its release.

The biggest performance hit seems to occur whenever I have my flashlight on and there's a ton of zombies onscreen, soon as I turn off the flashlight the framerate jumps way up.

Thats odd. some how i get more than the review gives.
I am using
CPU - Intel Go Quad Q6600
GPU - EVGA NVidia GTX 280
Rams - Corsair 4GB DDR2 800 mhz
MOBO - ABIT FATALITY 650i chipset
HDD - Western Digital VelociRaptor 10000rpm
i have cpu water cooling + gpu water cooling
playing on a viewsonic 2240 "22" 2ms gaming monitor
os - window xp sp3 dx9
nvidia firmware - 180.48 new driver

on resolution 1680

i have it on recommended best setting in the left 4 dead game.

i checked my fps
i got from 130-150 fps stable
and if its mass and all the effect it don't drop no more than 80 fps
but heat is a lot lol

maybe it just depends on everyone specs

E8400 at 3.6ghz vs Q6600 at 3.2ghz would be very close, might be slightly in favour of Q6600 because L4D uses more than 2 cores. However the E8400 is a Penryn therefor clock for clock its about 10% faster.

My friend has the Xeon E3110 (same as E8400) and I have a E6300 at 3ghz overlocked.

With his CPU at 3ghz and mine at 3ghz his is about 5 to 10% faster in many tests we did because its Penryn (newer architecture, better optimisations)

So the E8400 would have a 400mhz adv + about 10% while the Q6600 would use all its 4 cores... PCGH have said the Quad is about 25% faster than the E6600 at same mhz, so it would be very close... could be a win either way.

The good thing about the E8400 is that it can quite easily get to 4ghz.

I've love to see it how it compares to the E8400 @ 3.6ghz, as a Q6600 benched at stock is not a good comparison.

Is it possible to get the demo they used so I can run my own benchmark comparison?

Hello Snails,

If your planning on buying a GTX280 to get you through the game and not upgrading other parts for a few months then your really wasting money!

My friend had an AMD FX57 (about 30+% faster than your cpu) and we put my 8800GTX (much slower than GTX280) into his pc a few months ago to see if it was worth upgrading the graphics card or the whole pc.

The 8800GTX was running at about 50 to 70% usage... the CPU could not provide enough information to make it even heat up! In some games it was only slightly warmer than idle... so basically the answer is the FX57 was not able to power the 8800GTX past 70% on average.

Your cpu being slower than the FX57, and the GTX280 being much faster than the 8800GTX... I would safely say that the GTX280 in your system would be idling! It would only probably be running at 40 to 50% potential!

You would be wasting your money having this beast of a card hardly being used.

If your on a budget buy an 8800GT, a fast and cheap card which will let you play L4D much better than your 7800GT, but even that will be restrained by your CPU!

Otherwise buy a new mb, cpu, memory and the GTX280.... but expensive option

Good to see games starting to use quad core cpu's more and more, FC2 and now L4D... however a very quick C2Duo is still king as shown by the E8600 at 3.6ghz... my friend has an E8400 at 4ghz, its a very fast cpu for gaming!

Don't know if this helps. I've had an issue similar to the AMD results here where the framerate was fairly low, 11-15fps. However when multicore rendering was disabled, the framerate became fast enough to be playable, 30-50fps. Then again I have an old system.

AMD 3200+, 7800gt, 2gb

Will it be possible to see if disabling multicore helps much on the 3200+ with a gtx280. I'd be interested in the results as I'm stuck deciding between upgrading the cpu/mobo/ram or just getting a gtx280 to play through the rest of the game for now.

We used Catalyst 8.11 and Vista 64 Bit. We also didn't overclock the card.

Well, we will see if we can solve the problem. But the 4870 X2 shouldn't have any performance problems in Left 4 Dead anyway, since even the single 4870 is running well already.

Very odd. I'm on Windows XP 32bit SP3 with the latest directx 9 update and I'm not overclocked if that helps. I use the default CCC settings with vsync forced. Didn't notice any microstuttering either.

Independent on the settings our 4870 X2 didn't display the textures correctly. We only saw the HUD and some vague outlines on a black background. We don't know why this happens yet, but we will check for possible solutions.
