GC 2008: First impression of Razer's 7.1 headset Megalodon

It seems like Razer did exactly the opposite of Roccat: Instead of multiple speakers, like the Roccat Kave uses for the 5.1 sound, Razer simulates the 7.1 sound with two speakers only. Which solution creates the better sound, cannot be said without extensive testing of the final products. At the Games Convention only prerelease versions were available. While the Kave is connected to the soundcard the Megalodon has a USB connector and an integrated soundchip.

The finish of the earpieces is different, too. Instead of leathery cover Razer uses soft velour. But this is a clever feature of the Megalodon: There are two different sets of covers - one with leather and one with velour. So gamers can choose their favored material. That's exemplary.

The textile version covered the ears perfectly and the material was thick enough so that there is enough free space even for light jug ears. Another positive feature of the Megalodon is the bracket that can be adjusted at will and stays in position all the time. Razer wants to overhaul the microphone arm before the release, since it couldn't be lowered far enough on the sample - in the final version it won't be removable though. With the big control unit you can adjust the master volume or the individual channels.

Our sample music tracks revealed that the Megalodon delivers quite a good sound: Bass tones and heights were clear, even at high volumes. But other headsets already delivered a better high tone performance. The bass lack a little vitality. But Razer wants to improve the sound quality for the final version.
