Because of the integrated graphics processors, Intel dominated the GPU market for years.
According to the numbers of
John Peddie Research 94.4 million graphics cards have been sold in this quarter and 44.67 million of them were made by Intel. Comparded to the second quarter of the previous year Intel was able to increase the market share from 37.6 percent to 47.3 percent. Nvidia suffered a minor loss and went down from 32.5 percent to 21.4 percent, while AMD's share was reduced from 19.5 percent to 18.1 percent.
But when dealing with those numbers one has to bear in mind that they relate to the entire graphics market. If the integrated graphics processors are left out, Intel suddenly isn't playing a major role anymore because they don't have a discrete graphics solution. This will not be changed before the next year when Intel has to show if they can compete on the market with Larrabee.
The analysts by the way, expect to see AMD make impressive gains in Q3 - probably because of the HD 4800's successful introduction. So we might see some movement on the GPU market.
