Socket G34 for CPUs with eight and twelve cores

AMD: New CPU socket is said to have 1,974 pins

Author: (Jul 17, 2008) - It seems like AMD wants to introduce a new socket with phenomenal 1,974 pins for the future CPUs with eight and twelve cores, within two years.

As reported before, AMD looks forward to an interesting time. The number of cores is increasing and new chipsets will be introduced, so it was only a matter of time for a new socket to see the light of day. According to the latest AMD roadmap, at the beginning of 2009 they want to introduce the new socket with the codename G34 and 1,974 pins.

This socket will, according to Dailytech, counter the Triple Channel memory interface of Intel's future Nehalem chip with support for Quad Channel DDR3 RAM. Current roadmaps show memory clock speeds between 800 and 1,600 Megahertz. The giant socket, which will have 767 pins more than the current server socket LGA 1207, will deliver a base for the future eight core CPU Sao Paolo, which will be combined from two four core Shanghai processors.

Furthermore, AMD is working on a CPU with twelve cores, codename Magny-Cours. Both processors are said to have four Hyper Transport 3 lanes, 12 MiByte L3 cache and 512 KiByte L2 cache for each core. The fourth Hyper Transport lane is said to be used for connecting auxiliary processors to the CPU.
